Before reading Searching for Cloves and Lillies: The Wine Edition I only knew Regine Rousseau as a smart and admired leader in the wine world. Now, after reading this wonderful collection of hers, I know her to be a writer possessed of technical acumen, deep insight, and great affection for the people (and wines!!) that fill her world. Her poems and short prose pieces invite readers to slow down, fine wine in hand, and turn their hearts and mind to the great loves and losses that give meaning to their lives. And, as they become more aware of the particular wine the writer has chosen, the precise and engaging tasting notes that accompany each piece make more sense, and invite them, again, back into the heart of the poem. I’m thinking of challenging myself to read this vibrant collection once more, but with each wine that Rousseau pairs with the written word. Is it possible to love a book three different times, in three different ways? I guess I’m going to find out.

An excellent read! I absolutely recommend this book if you are looking for something different. It’s quick, intriguing, and makes you appreciate wine in a whole different way. I would describe this as “the perfect date book.” Trying the different wines and reading the poetry together, makes for a new experience. The only challenge is being able to find all of the different wines to try. Loving this!

Whether you already love wine and/or poetry, or have dabbled in either, you will find deep richness in this collection. I haven’t officially paired the words with the wines yet (though the writer’s descriptions of the flavor profiles are perfect!), but this is a book to keep on hand and enjoy on a regular basis. There’s almost too much here to get through in one sitting but I love the idea of sharing a bottle or five and reading this with someone special or in a book club. It would also be a great pairing with one of the mentioned bottles as a host gift. Love this fresh concept!
